Storytelling and music

storytelling and music

Michael and Stacy held me spellbound for two days. Their rich knowledge of storytelling and music is well balanced with a generous dose of playfulness and humor.

I left the workshop feeling not only wonderfully equipped with tools and knowledge, but also warm, open hearted, and inspired and ready to dive deep into the practice.

Dreaming the Night Field

Storytelling and music are made for each other but, in practice, they often seem to get in each other’s way. How can we step back and let the magic happen? This workshop will show you how…

Michael Harvey and Stacey Blythe have been combining traditional story and music for decades including extended touring with the ground-breaking shows Hunting the Gian’s Daughter, Dreaming the Night Field and the bilingual storytelling, music and dance show Y Llyn.

We will have equal numbers of musicians and storytellers in the group and begin to bring the two forms into a dynamic alignment. We will be inviting you to step out of your normal comfort zone and avoid the temptation to get things ‘right’ (aka ‘boring’). If you are a musician you may find yourself telling and if you are a storyteller you might find your self playing an instrument or singing.

If a bit of you cringed when you read that last sentence it is a very good sign indeed! We will curate a playful and safe place where you can boldly make loads of mistakes until the pure gold of music and story start to flow together in ways that we can’t anticipate.

This is definitely not a ‘storyteller and accompanist’ relationship. It’s about working together to make the story real in ways that are joyful , deep and strange.
