Michael’s coaching sessions are the storytelling equivalent of Jedi training.
— Daniel Allison - storyteller and author

Maybe you’ve caught the storytelling bug and want to tell in public but don’t know where to start.

Or, perhaps you’ve already started but have got stuck or disorientated and don’t know what to do next to improve.

Or, worse, you have had a bad training experience that’s making the jump back in just too daunting.

But the storytelling bug has got you, won’t let go and you don’t know where to turn!

First Online Session - May 2nd 7pm UK time

Michael’s course is jam packed full of knowledge, which is delivered in a kind and loving way. I left feeling uplifted, more confident and a better storyteller. I would highly recommend working with Michael in any and every capacity.

I have recommended this course already! Do it, learn actual real world techniques to develop yourself and your storytelling. You’ll learn about yourself, about your stories and feel confident in developing and telling them. I have learned real skills I will go back to again and again.

I know this course works because I piloted it with a cohort during lockdown. I was pretty sure that I was on the right track because I did a load of interviews with would-be storytellers and found out what was holding them back and then designed the course around those issues. You can see the feedback from that pilot cohort and other storytellers I have coached throughout this webpage.

Joyful Practice is the key! The need to ‘get it right’ is so ingrained in us that we forget our basic job - to make deep and delightful storytelling happen in public!

Practice should be both challenging and fun. It is not about beating ourselves up but creating the environment where we can excel, flourish and surprise ourselves and our audience.

The course is divided into three main parts…

  • Repertoire

  • Practice

  • Performance

Here are some of the topics we will work with…

  • Finding your story

  • Storytelling Modes (description, action, information, dialogue)

  • Storytelling structure for storytellers

  • Storytelling Gaze (scene, character, audience)

  • Creating the habit of practice

  • Affirmative co-coaching

By the end of the course you will have (at least) one cracking 15/20+ minute story ready to go and the tools to work on and develop many more.

I had no idea that online learning could be so much fun. In five weekly sessions Michael identified and nurtured the potential of a diverse group of people, bringing his own high expertise and knowledge to the learning in a way that made us feel excited, enabled and equally part of the learning. I came away with clear tools with which to deepen and enhance my practice and joyful motivation to keep on climbing the hill. The depth and playfulness of the learning created a strong bond between the members of the group.
— Jane Springham - storyteller

This course will include…

  • Live zoom sessions (with recordings available)

  • Pre-recorded practice demonstrations to be worked on in your own time

  • A dedicated learning platform where you can watch pre-recorded sessions and catch up on zoom sessions you may have missed.

  • Cohort based affirmative coaching

  • Regular whole-group Q&A sessions

  • Video feedback on one ten/15 minute recorded story for each participant

  • A blended course delivery

This is a great course for super-charging your practice! The depth of learning is impressive and the community feeling you build over the weeks really sustains you.

Michael’s course was transformational. Not only is Michael a wise and generous teacher, he is also a cultural link.  Out of Michael’s class I have become connected with a whole community of fantastic fellow tellers.  Creative, resilient, laughing and compelling, we are now our own unfolding story...and it is marvellous
— Bronwin Patrickson PhD
Michael has at the same time helped me to find roots to stabilise in storytelling, as well as wings on which to continue the journey of discovery and expansion. Thank you for this essential ‘starter kit.’

I have questions…

What dates do I have to be available? The main training sessions will be on the following dates… May 2, 9, 16, 25, 30 and June 6, 13, 20,27. All sessions run from 7pm - 9pm UK time. It is best for you to be present for these sessions to get most out of the course although they will be recorded for you to review in your own time

What if I’m not available for all the sessions? The live zoom sessions are all videoed so you can watch them later. I recommend that you turn up live whenever possible to get the best out of the cohort experience and use the recordings as a reminder. The recordings will stay up on the learning platform for a few months after the end of the course for you to go back to.

What’s a learning platform? It is basically a website where I host videos and other learning materials set out in a clear, chronological sequence. You can revisit the modules as often as you like. My learning platform is with Ruzuku and you will need to sign-up to get access (it’s free!).

English is not my native language. Is this course suitable for me? If you have been able to follow this webpage your English is definitely good enough. You will have the option of working in either your own language or in English, as you please. I have found that storytelling is linguistically transparent. I have delivered this course for a German cohort and I don’t speak a word of German - but it still worked!

How do you keep the momentum and commitment going on a virtual course? Although we don’t have a group of people in the same room this course uses an accountability and buddy system so that participants will work in pairs or small groups, co-coaching and practicing together outside the actual course delivery. I will create the groups and you will work out meeting times together. I will mix the accountability groups up during the course for variety. I am happy to take your own timetable and time zone into account when we organise this.

How much of my time will this take? The course delivery will take place over nine weeks. There are nine live online group sessions which are best viewed live and are also available as recordings if you happen to miss one or want to catch up. There will also be five accountability sessions where you will be placed in small groups to review, practice and find questions and queries for the following live session. I am currently allotting an hour and a half for the live zoom sessions but this may increase depending on how many students enroll. The maximum length of online sessions will be two hours.

Our first session will be on zoom on the 2nd of May at 7pm UK time. There will be nine weekly zoom sessions including a wrap-up and conclusion session on the 27th of June. The other sessions will be pre-recorded videos for you to work with before the following zoom sessions which will allow you to work at your own pace and make the most of our time when we meet on zoom.
